UpcomingMinnesota District Convention 2020 – Minnesota River Valley Conference
July 31, 2020 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
May 18, 2020
WELS Congregations, Ministries, and Convention Delegates,
In a typical even-numbered year, the Minnesota District of the WELS gathers at Martin Luther College in June to conduct its normal business. Due to social distancing and concerns with COVID-19, we will not be gathering in New Ulm, but we will have a briefer gathering online (DATE TO BE DETERMINED). The WELS Conference of Presidents (COP) recommends that all of our districts in the WELS conduct an online nominating/voting process to elect a district presidium (district president/1st and 2nd vice presidents/district secretary) for the next two years. The presidium will appoint people to fill other offices in the district. Details of this election process will be shared with district delegates in the coming weeks.
We do need your assistance to prepare for this election process. First of all, we will need the name of every congregation lay delegate along with their email and cell number. This is part one of electronic registration by congregation or ministry via WELSMN.org.
For the second part, we need your congregation or ministry to pay the district fee of $50/delegate on WELSMN.org. Your congregation/ministry fee will be listed by name and fee in the registration process. Some might ask, “Why are you gathering a fee when everything is virtual?” Great question—and here is your answer. Your delegate fee will support:
1. Counseling for all called worker families through Christian Family Counseling for the next two years,
2. Web registration fees, merchant bank fees, software and support expenses associated with WELSMN.org for the next two years,
3. The fees for 51 delegates from the Minnesota District to attend the synod convention in July of 2021.
The registration window for the district election is a more compressed 3 weeks, from Monday, May 18 through Monday, June 8. After that the fee will increase to $75/delegate, so please make every effort to help your congregation register as soon as possible and avoid the extra $25/delegate.
After a congregation or ministry’s registration and payment is received, a code will be emailed to each delegate that will enable them to take part in secure private nominating and voting. More details on the timing and process for voting will be shared at a later date.
We thank you in advance your cooperation in making sure fees are paid, your lay delegate is fully registered, and all your delegates receive a voting code in a timely way. If you have any questions, feel free to call, text or email me.
We hope and pray this is the only time we have to cancel a convention and vote this way, that we might all be able to worship together again soon, that our healthcare workers and all others be kept safe, and that our faith and trust in our saving Lord only grows through these unique challenges. May Jesus’s peace fill you.
